Billy Franklin II, Navy Veteran, Welding Graduate

Billy’s story is one of resilience, determination, and transformation. He grew up in Odessa, Texas, a town synonymous with Friday Night Lights and a passion for football. Life had its challenges, but Billy carried a deep sense of responsibility and determination from an early age. He described his upbringing as tightly knit but marked by struggles that shaped his resilient spirit. After high school, Billy had the chance to attend college at Arizona State University on a track scholarship but instead joined the military. His decision was driven by a desire to support his family, especially his mother, who was facing difficulties at home.

In February, shortly after high school graduation, Billy enlisted in the Navy. Reflecting on his choice, he remarked, “I wanted to be in the Navy to make something of myself and take care of my family.” His 11-year service included roles on the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) and a transformative Westpac deployment. However, Billy’s time in the military was marred by a devastating car accident that would change his life.

While returning from a wedding in Los Angeles, Billy was involved in a horrific collision on Interstate 805. After coming to and helping others involved in the crash get to safety off the highway, he was struck by a car and dragged underneath it 60 yards. “The doctors didn’t know what to do with me,” Billy recounted. “They just said I’d heal, but I was in the hospital, and they weren’t doing anything to help me recover.” His injuries were extensive, leaving him with scars and physical limitations that would persist. Despite the pain, Billy saw his survival as a testament to resilience. “I’m blessed to be alive. I shouldn’t have been.”

Billy’s transition from military life was far from smooth. Financial struggles, housing issues, and difficulty accessing his benefits compounded his challenges. At one point, his apartment flooded, destroying his possessions. “I was a single father with two boys,” Billy shared. “I spent most of my savings trying to keep us afloat.” Despite his efforts to further his education, life threw curveballs, including the tragic closure of the computer school he attended, which rendered his certifications invalid.

Eventually, Billy learned about Workshops for Warriors, a nonprofit dedicated to training veterans for careers in advanced manufacturing. Seeking a fresh start and a chance to build a better future, he enrolled in the Welding 1 program. The experience has been transformative. “Being at Workshops for Warriors is the most successful part of my life,” Billy said.

The sense of camaraderie Billy found at Workshops for Warriors mirrors the bond he shared with fellow service members. At first, he felt out of place, especially among younger classmates. “I’m 52. I didn’t think I had anything in common with these young kids,” Billy admitted. But over time, he found his footing and developed meaningful connections. He credits the staff, including teaching assistant Sean, for creating a supportive environment. “The whole staff is great,” Billy emphasized. “They make you feel like you belong.”

Billy’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of community. Despite immense hardships, he has found a path forward through Workshops for Warriors. His journey inspires others to overcome obstacles and take the first step toward a brighter future.

“I don’t believe any veteran should go through what I’ve been through,” Billy asserts, reflecting on his past and inspiring others to seek the support they need. Workshops for Warriors offers a beacon of hope for veterans like Billy, empowering them to rebuild their lives and careers. Billy now envisions a future where he can work for a couple of years before returning to Texas, ready to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
